Awards To Get 2011 Off To A Great Start!

>> Monday, January 3, 2011

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2011 has started off on the right track for all of you. Do you have any new years resolutions? I have a relatively long list that I will be trying my hardest to stick to. One of the resolutions is to try to keep on top of things, because it seems like I'm always playing catchup. The only excuse I have is that there just isn't enough hours in a day/week/month or year to do everything I need and want to do. But I'm going to try my hardest. Keeping with the "staying on top of things" I'm catching up on some awards I received in the past several months. I apologize to those of you who passed these lovely awards on to me for not getting to them sooner, there was just so much happening here.

The first award, One Lovely Blog Award, was given to me by Jamie from Lady Fromage. Thank you Jamie!

The next award, One Lovely Blog Award, was given to me by Lisa from Sweet as Sugar. Thank you Lisa!

Sandra from Sandra's Easy Cooking, passed on her very own lovely award. It's called 'Cause You Are Worth It. Thank you Sandra!

Dimah from Orange Blossom Water gave me the Versatile Blogger Award. Thank you Dimah!

And last but not least, Roxana (aka GreenGirl) from A Little Bit of Everything, gave me the One Lovely Blog Award. Thank you Roxana!

I would like to pass on the One Lovely Blog Award and the Versatile Award to the following foodie bloggers. Please stop their blogs and say hello. Recipients if you would like to accept the awards you can right click to save the award images to your computer. If you do not participate in awards, no problem and no hurt feelings.

- Sandra Sandra's Easy Cooking
- Claudia, What's Cooking Italian Style Cuisine
- The Ardent Epicure Team, The Ardent Epicure
- Trix, Tasty Trix
- Patty, Patty's Food

On another note I have a recipe and the first photography tutorial lined up, so stay tuned for that. I hope the first week of 2011 will be great and I'm looking forward to all the new recipes of 2011. Best wishes everyone!

An Award, A Game and and Update

>> Wednesday, October 27, 2010

So much to cover today, first the update. So it was brought to my attention that the code to embed the badges for the YBR event were linking to the wrong page. It has been corrected and again you can find the html codes here, YBR codes. Just a clarification, the html codes are so that you can copy the html code for the badge of your choice into your blog. The codes will load the image on to your blog and when they are clicked on will direct the person to the YBR page here on Spicie Foodie. The page will have links to all of the monthly events with your images. If you need any help/clarification, or walk through on how to install the html code please don't hesitate to ask/email me and I'd be glad to help. I have been receiving such delicious photos, don't forget to send me yours by the 30th.

Lovely Blog Award
And on to the award. I received the "ONE LOVELY BLOG AWARD" from one of my favorite foodie and bloggers, Alisha from The Ardent Epicure. I'm sure most of you know Alisha, Adam, and Grely, the team from The Ardent Epicure. So you all know that their blog Rocks! They never seize to amaze me with their talent and mouthwatering recipes. Out of the three I've gotten to know Alisha the most, and she is one of the kindest person you will meet. She has never had anything but kind words, outpouring support, encouragement and friendship to give. She is a gem in our food blogger community. From the bottom of my heart thank you Sweetie.

There are so many I would like to pass on the award to, but this is just a very short list of some of my favorite bloggers:
Tanantha : I Just Love My Apron
Stella : The Witchy Kitchen
Jill : The Home Ground Gourmet
Penny : Jeroxie
Liv : Egg Wan's Eastern Food Odyssey
Brie: Le Grand Fromage
Patty: Patty's Food
Connor : Hold The Beef
Ruby: Tomayto Tomaahto
Miriam : The Winter Guest
Heather : Girlchef
Monet : Anecdotes and Apple Cores
Cristina: From BA to Paris
Gina: What's For Dinner Across State Lines
Sommer: A Mama With Flavor

Now the game, Tag I'm it! Raven from the delicious blog RavieNomNoms, tagged me and this is how the game is played: "You answer the 8 questions that were tagged to you. You then create 8 more questions and tag 8 people to answer them. Again, no one has to feel obligated to answer, but it is a good way to get to know your fellow bloggers" Thank you Raven! And everyone please stop by her blog, her recipes are delicious and Raven is such a sweetie.

1. What was your favorite part of this week?
Oh this is a good one, I've had a couple things. Friday, because I got to see my very good friend Luba. She is a great person and I'm very lucky to have her in my life. Plus she got me away from the computer, which I needed badly. Tuesday, I received a package in the mail that made me very happy and can't wait to share with you guys. And also, well I don't want this to come off as me being egotistical, because I am not at all. But it totally made my day to see my Kuri Squash Corn Muffins mentioned by David Lebovitz http://t.co/PYgEIcJ, such an honor.

2. What do you like to do when you are sick?
Eat soup, drink tea, wrap a warm blanket or scarf around myself. I also like to add a little more whining about how I feel to get some extra attention, I'm evil I know. But I can't help it I have the "Marsha,Marsha!" syndrome of a middle child. For those of you that don't get it, the reference is from a show called The Brady Bunch. The middle child, Jan, was jealous of all of the attention the older child, Marsha, would receive. She felt like she didn't have attention. I have 5 siblings to take away mine :). I love that show!

3. What are you or your kids going to be for Halloween?
I only have one "kid" Panchito, the Scruffy Scrappy Terrier, and he would like to be a bucket of KFC. Original recipe, so Mommy and Daddy will fill it with lots of little original recipe bits. So he can do this↓

4. What is your favorite Holiday? and why? I think Christmas. (But not for the religious aspect, I'm a heathen even though I was raised Christian.) Why? Because for me it's more like a day for being grateful for all the wonderful things in my life. It's not about the material things or commercialization of the holiday. I wouldn't care if I didn't receive one gift. As long as I am with loved ones and they tell me they love me, that's all that matters to me and that is the greatest gift. (Cheesy I know)

5. What cookbook do you use more than any other?
I think that would have to be my Asian cookbooks that my friend brings me from his Asian trips. Without those I wouldn't have learned so many new great dishes.

6. Are you a coffee or tea drinker?
I love both but sadly I really can't drink coffee anymore. The amount of caffeine in coffee makes me shaky and triggers my Hypoglycemia so I'm a 99% tea drinker. Don't get me wrong I love tea and it's become my comfort drink.

7. If you had to choose one style of food to eat for a month, what would it be? (ie: Italian, Mexican..) Hands-down that would be Mexican. But I mean real, authentic traditional Mexican food. Preferably prepared by my eldest sister and my Mami. Being so far from home I dream and salivate over the thought of all the delicious foods and treats from Mexican cuisine.

8. What got you to start blogging? (I am going to steal this one from Kate) A much needed distraction away from my job. I started blogging just for fun, then it turned into a "Menu" for us and now it's taken a life of it's own with many rewards and bonus in my life because of it.

My Questions:
1. Who taught you or how did you learn to cook?
2. Do you listen to music when you cook? If so what type or who is the artist?
3. What foodie gift are you asking Santa for this year? ( like a new mixer or perhaps a new camera?)
4. What is the most difficult dish you have cooked or baked?
5. Do you have a kitchen disaster that left you in tears then, but now makes you laugh? or perhaps still makes you cry?
6. What is your favorite book? Whether cookbook, biography, novel, ...
7. What is the biggest reward to you from your blog?
8. Do you have a goal or is there something you hope to accomplish with your blog?

Tag and you are it : ( Again there are so many I would like to include, but only allowed 8.)
1. Alisha The Ardent Epicure
2. Stella : The Witchy Kitchen
3. Monet : Anecdotes and Apple Cores
4. Cristina: From BA to Paris
5. Tanantha : I Just Love My Apron
6. Emily : Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
7. Karen : Tasty Trials
8. Patty: Patty's Food

Warm Shredded Carrot Salad with Carrot Greens (Vegan)

>> Sunday, October 24, 2010

carrot; green; greens; edible; tops; salad; snack; spicy; shredded; onion; garlic; warm; side dish; healthy; vegan; vegetable; organic
I have a delicious new recipe to share with you today. But first I want to tell you that the YBR event has it's own permanent page with all of the information, linking codes and badges for our lovely monthly event. Check it out, it's up there on the menu bar as YBR. OK so on to the recipe. Did you know that Carrot greens or carrot tops are edible? Yuppers, they are! The other day I picked up a bunch of fresh organic carrots that were on sale with the greens still on them and I got curious, are they edible? I quickly found out that they are and in fact are quite nutritious, rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins. The carrot tops can be used raw or cooked, tossed in salads, used in soups and many other creative ways. I found this great site full of info all about carrot greens and even some recipes, it's called Carrot Museum. On this site they also wrote the following, "The leaves do contain furocoumarins that may cause allergic contact dermatitis from the leaves, especially when wet. Later exposure to the sun may cause mild photodermatitis. (This is NOT the same as 'poisonous' - it will only affect susceptible people with allergies to the plant. Some people have the same reaction to yarrow, ragwort, chamomile etc.)" I handled and cooked the greens, we both ate them and we are both still alive, so no allergies for either of us. The taste is quite strong so I would suggest that you use them sparingly at first or taste to see if it's something you like the taste of. The taste was a little bit bitter and very leafy tasting. I wouldn't say I loved the taste but I also didn't hate it. Anyways, I did really like the warm shredded carrot salad I added the greens to. It was a little sweet and a little garlicky. This is a fast and easy recipe for a great side dish or you could also eat this as a main meal. It is also vegan, healthy and low in calories without skimping on great taste. I served the salad along with steamed white rice and some sauted eggplant for a small vegan meal.
carrot; green; greens; edible; tops; salad; snack; spicy; shredded; onion; garlic; warm; side dish; healthy; vegan; vegetable; organic

Serves 2
Ingredients:
3 medium carrots, peeled and shredded
carrot leaf greens to taste ( I used a small handful)
1 small red onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 inch or 2.5 cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
3.5 ounces or 100 grams shredded cabbage
1/2 tsp. salt, adjust to taste
pinch of black pepper
1/4 tsp. ground Turmeric
1 Tbs. sunflower oil

1. Heat the oil in a large pan then add the finely chopped red onion and saute until soft. Add the garlic, ginger and saute for 3 minute. Next add the shredded cabbage stir to combine with the pan ingredients, cover and allow the cabbage to soften completely. Once the cabbage is soft add the carrot and carrot leafs stirring to well combine all of the ingredients. Lastly sprinkle in the spices and stir the vegetables well. Continue to cook until the carrots have softened, about another 5 minutes. Serve as a side dish or as a main meal with some steamed white rice, it's delicious as a vegan meal or snack.

Haha, I just noticed that October has been a very orange/yellow food color month here on Spicie Foodie.

DMBLGIT award and Kofola

DMBGLIT, award, blogger awards, photography, contest

I'm so excited I have received another award, this time it's from the monthly photography contest DMBLGIT. July's installment was hosted by the lovely Asha from Fork Spoon Knife.

DMBLGIT ,raw,Almonds,3rd Place July

The award was for 3rd Place and I am humbled and honored to have been one of the winners. As always there were some beautiful shots by very talented fellow bloggers and to have been included in the winners list came as a very welcomed surprise. I'm excited because this is my second time winning, you can see the previous one here. The winning shot was from my Almond milk recipe.By the way they need people to host the monthly events, if you are interested please visit SpittoonExtra for more details.

When I saw the email from Asha yesterday I felt like giving myself a little treat. I had a Kofola. What is a Kofola? it is a Czech/Slovak soft drink that is similar to Coca Cola and Pepsi. In fact the drink is the #1 rival to those companies here in the Czech/Slovak lands. Some of you may have noticed that I'm not big on sugar and certainly not on sugar drinks/ soft drinks or as I like to call them sugar water. It's not something I like to drink well, ever. But Kofola was something I had to try. I have been asked by some Czechs if I have ever tasted Kofola and they couldn't believe I had not. You see they are very proud of their uniquely Czech product and they started to tell me a bit about this drink and insisting that I had to try it some time. Well of course it's something that had to go on my list of things to try. I did a little search and here's what I found out : ( per Wikipedia)

Kofola,soft drink

"Kofola originated in the Czechoslovak pharmaceutical company Galena in the early 1960s during research targeted at finding a possible use for surplus caffeine produced in the process of coffee roasting. The resulting dark-coloured, sweet-and-sour syrup Kofo became the main ingredient of a new soft drink named Kofola introduced in 1962.
During the 1960s and 1970s Kofola became exceedingly popular in communist Czechoslovakia because it substituted for Western cola-based drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi, which were available but priced at more than twice the price of Kofola. Kofo syrup, the main ingredient of Kofola, consists of 14 natural ingredients (such as extracts from apple, cherry, currant, or herbal aroma), sugar, and caramel. In comparison with Pepsi or Coca-Cola it contains 30% less sugar, a little more caffeine (17 mg/100ml, Coca-Cola 15 mg/100ml) and it does not contain phosphoric acid. "

I have to admit for someone who doesn't normally drink or like this type of drink I quite enjoyed Kofola. Though it was still a bit sugary for my taste, it wasn't over the top sweet. It had a slightly fruity flavor with a hint of what I though was cloves - I could be wrong. It was also fun drinking it out of an old fashion glass bottle with a straw. Either way I'm glad I finally tried it even if I can't manage to drink another one I'll remember it fondly. Unfortunately I didn't find any evidence of this drink being available outside of this region. But if you're ever visiting make sure you try the drink, well if you can fit it in with all the beer tasting that takes place here. Czechs are also very proud, as well they should be, of their beers.

Kofola, soft drink, glass bottle, old fashion, bottle cap

Haha maybe the company will come across my blog and get the idea to export it all over the world :) yeah right.

A couple of days ago I received this "Honest Scrap" honesty award, and I am so excited and honored. A wonderful fellow foodie named, Scott who pens the Fight the Fat Foodie blog is whom awarded this to me. Scott's blog is one of my favorite blogs to read (even if I don't comment often), because it's a real honest and healthy approach to food. He blogs about his struggle with weight gain and how he is living a healthier life style and continuing to loose the weight. Though I don't have a weight issue I still believe in eating as healthy as possible without having to give up all of our favorite foods , Scott and I share this in common. He has so many wonderful recipes that will make your mouth water. My favorite at the moment is his peppered tuna steak with rosemary potatoes, yummy!!Oh yeah, for those of you who are members of Weight Watchers, you'll be thrilled to see that he gives you the WW points. Please stop by Fight the Fat Foodie blog and pay Scott a visit.

Accepting this award means that I have to pass on the award to 10 fellow food bloggers that are honest in their approach to blogging and food. I also have to tell you 10 honest things about myself.

10 honest things about myself....
1. I refused to listen to my Mother when she would try to teach me to cook, she should be proud of me now:)
2. My kitchen is the size of a closet and minimally equipped which makes me scream sometimes from the lack of work space.
3. Some nights I cook 2 different dinners , 1 for my husband and I and 1 special meal for my Dog. (He's spoiled since we don't have children yet.)

At a restaurant if food takes too long, or on nights when my husband cooks when dinner is taking too long and I have to wait to eat past our normal 8 dinner time. My poor husband has to hear me complain, but I blame it on my hypoglycemia, really I can't help it:)) Hypoglycemic rage is not a pretty thing, lol .

September DMBLGIT Winner! Originality Category

>> Thursday, October 1, 2009

My first award! Last month I entered one of my photos for the September 2009 Edition of DMBLGIT (Does My Blog Look Good In This? ) contest, that was being hosted by Michelle of Brown Eyed Baker, and I was among the winners. My photos (below) was the winner for the Originality Category. There were some amazing entries and it's quite an honor to have been chosen from all of those lovely photos.

This award is a monthly event held by Andrew of Spittoonextra, and per his site here is a little background information about DMBLGIT, " Does My Blog Look Good In This (DMBLGIT) is a monthly food photography event, called by some as "the grandest foodporn event available" on the web. It is open to all bloggers who have posted a photograph with a food or drink connection. Each monthly round is hosted by a different blogger. Food bloggers submit their best photos from posts they completed during the previous month which are then judged and scored. Winners are made covering three categories (edibility, aesthetics, and originality) plus three overall winners. Each month, a new contest starts, hosted on a different food blogger's site. "

Next months' or October's contest is being held by hosted Astrid from Paulchen’s Foodblog. Maybe you'll enter this month?
